  1. I read Catcher in the Rye 14 times between freshman and junior year in high school. I had a good friend who patterned her speech after Holden Caulfield. The genius of Nine Stories practically ruined me for any other short story writer. I can’t feel sad-dying of natural causes at the age of 91, living life, as far as anyone can tell, on your own terms, is only a cause of envy and a bit of awe. I remember reading somewhere that years ago he said that Catcher in the Rye should be shelved on a high shelf, because it wasn’t appropriate reading for children. He was right, of course. But it was perfect reading for anyone in the throes of rebellious adolescence. RIP, J.D.
