On February 7 luminaries from both the motion picture and theater world attended a private funeral at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Manhattan for film and stage actor and theatre director Philip Seymour Hoffman.  Hoffman, who died tragically on February 2 at age 46, had long ties to the New York stage dating back to his 2000 Theatre World winning performance in Sam Shepard's play "True West." In 2012 Hoffman had the plum role of Willy Loman in an acclaimed revival of Arthur Miller's classic "Death of a Salesman." Throughout this time Hoffman was long associated off-Broadway with the Labyrinth Theater Company, once serving as artistic director.

In 2006 Philip Seymour Hoffman ran the gamut of awards playing the lead in "Capote." He captured Best Actor honors at the Golden Globe, Screen Actor Guild, Independent Spirit and Academy Awards for playing the flamboyant writer. Hoffman would follow this up with his third Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for 2007's "Charlie Wilson's War." Both these films are also in Merrick's DVD collection.

In addition, you will find the following on DVD displaying the many talents of
Philip Seymour Hoffman:

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Cold Mountain
Flawless
The Ides of March
Jack Goes Boating
A Late Quartet
Love Liza
Mission Impossible III
Moneyball
Pirate Radio
Red Dragon
Savages (Independent Spirit Award, Best Actor, 2006)
Synecdoche, New York

On February 5 at the Actor's Studio, actress Amy Adams broke down emotionally when in review of her career there came the subject of Philip Seymour Hoffman. The two had worked together in the 2009 film "Doubt' and 2012's "The Master" (both in Merrick Library's DVD collection), two movies which earned Hoffman Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations. Through her tears Miss Adams told the budding thespians assembled that every one of them would have benefited from working with her friend. The "Inside the Actor's Studio" program on Amy Adams will air February 19 on the Bravo cable network.
